Will I Ever Need Math in The Real World
Will I Ever Need Math in The Real World Students often question the usefulness of algebra and express various objections. I dont need algebra, because Im not going to college. Yes. Maybe. But is it worth it to limit future prospects and opportunities? Can you say, that your child will not be an accountant or manager of a construction company? Can you say in advance that interest in science will not wake up when you are older? At an older age, it will be harder to fill the gaps of knowledge. Many students wonder why they have to learn logarithms and differentials. Of course examples and solving the problems very can be difficult. But this is the way we need to pass through, so the childs brain will be able to cope with lifes challenges, to be able to find solutions on their own. Every day we use math. From a simple order of fast food to larger transactions(buying a car, the calculation of interest on a loan or deposit). Mathematics is the only true universal language. Wherever you go, you can chat with people from all walks of life, and they cannot understand you when you say Math. SAT and ACT Specific Tips for Common Problems Part II
SAT and ACT Specific Tips for Common Problems â" Part II Tips from an Irvine SAT and ACT Tutor: Common Problems Tips from an Irvine SAT and ACT Tutor: Common Problems For the math/quantitative: The two most common problems I see with the math sections are wasting too much time on a few problems, and giving up on questions because they look unfamiliar. When you review your practice tests, are you running out of time? Were there some questions you never even got to look at? Or, do you find that some questions were much easier than you thought after you see the solutions? You might benefit from these tips book your private Costa Mesa math tutor today. First, if you arenât finishing the whole math sections, you need to learn to prioritize. If youâre spending 5+ minutes on one question, you are likely wasting your time. There might be a much easier question that you know how to do later in the test, but you didnât give yourself the time to get to it. If you are going to guess, you want to be speculating on the questions that you know you canât solve, not just the one you never got a chance to look at. You should always be getting to the end of the whole section, even if that means skipping a lot of questions that you think are harder or will take too long. The next tip is to have confidence in your math ability. Believe it or not, you very likely have learned every topic on the math/quantitative sections of these tests. Many of the questions are purposefully worded and structured in a way to confuse you. The test-makers are seeing if you can look at an atypical question and figure out how to apply your knowledge to solve it. Making Things Click Frequently, Iâll have students look at a math problem and say âoh, I never learned this.â Then, when we go over how to solve it, everything clicks and they realize that they had learned the necessary skills. Have confidence in yourself and remember that these tests are not using any outlandish or highly advanced mathematics. For the reading/verbal: Weâll have three tips for these sections from three more common problems. The first common problem is running out of time. These are timed exams, and if you are a slow reader, that could be a huge problem in the reading sections. There are many strategies for students who run out of time that are dependent upon each individualâs skills. Here are some you can try: Finding passages that look simpler/more familiar and reading them first. Itâs better to run out of time on the harder sections than to guess on easier ones. Never read any passages, only skim them. If you are spending too much time reading, then you canât afford to read it. Many of the questions will ask for details that will require you to go back to the passage anyway. Read only a couple sentences so you have the main idea, then go to the questions and head back to the passage to scan for any needed details. Read the questions first. A common tip that some students find effective is to read the questions before the passage so that they know what to look for when theyâre skimming. This can help you read faster if you have an idea of what details you can ignore. Dont Give Up Aside from running out of time, another common problem is giving up on a passage before you even get to the questions. The topics of the essays, excerpts, and articles on these tests can be very unfamiliar. Whether itâs about some moment in history youâve never learned, a scientific process with complicated names, or a work of art from a different place and different time â" it is likely that you will encounter reading topics that you have never even heard of. This is done on purpose. Like in the math section, the test-makers are seeing if you can use your knowledge to extract some meaning and answer questions about something that seems confusing. You donât need to know anything about the topic, you just need to find the details and keywords to answer the questions. This leads to the next problem, which is when students do use their prior knowledge. You may be reading a passage that you do know about and have opinions on. The final tip is to make sure that you are objective and literal: unless the question asks you to, donât make assumptions about the author or the characters in a passage. Also, you must distance yourself and your opinions from what you are reading. You can only use what is written in the passage to answer the questions, and many times there will be answers that are seemingly obvious to you but are false based on the text you just read. These are just a few of the many test-taking tips that can be valuable for standardized tests. Again, these tips are not relevant to everyone, but they may be useful to you. It is important to identify problems first before looking for solutions. If you arenât confident in doing that yourself, it can usually be beneficial to seek out an expert to help you locate and solve your individual problems with the test. Read part one here. How Will the AP U.S. History Exam Change in May 2015
How Will the AP U.S. History Exam Change in May 2015 In May of 2015, there will be changes to the Advanced Placement U.S. History test. These changes have been in the works since 2006, with the new framework rolled out in 2012 to give teachers the chance to prepare themselves and their students. There will also be changes to the AP Physics B Exam in May 2015as well. So, what will the new exam look like? How has it changed, and why? Why is the exam changing? The prior AP U.S. History exam was heavily criticized. Mainly, critique focused on the exams length, as well as its questions spanning such a wide range of potential topics that students did not always know what to study. Moreover, many teachers did not feel they were able to teach important topics in an in-depth manner. Some felt the old exam tested trivia-like information instead of students deeper knowledge of historical concepts and their critical thinking skills. The revised test addresses these issues by focusing questions more on analyzing historical documents, as opposed to recalling isolated facts. Additionally, the revised course framework and accompanying exam attempt to align the curriculum more closely with that of college introductory U.S. History classes. The focus has shifted the responsibility of students from displaying knowledge of historical facts to being able to think critically about historical information and analyze multiple viewpoints. There has been some criticism of the new test saying that it focuses too much on themes across history and critical thinking, and not enough on the basics that students need to know. However, the test creators are optimistic about the switch, and maintain the stance that changes in the course and exam will benefit students in the long run. What does the exam look like? The AP U.S. History exam is a two-section test, each section being composed of two smaller parts. The number of questions, as well as the content of these questions, have been changed in the new exam starting in May 2015. The first section of the exam consists of multiple-choice and short answer questions, and is to be completed in one hour and 45 minutes. One of the main changes of the new test is a reduced number of multiple-choice questions; while it used to have 80 questions, the new test will have only 55. The primary criticism of the questions in the old test was that they were essentially fact recall and resembled trivia prompts. The new test questions require students to analyze and interpret primary or secondary source documents (e.g. text, charts, maps, etc.) provided in the test, while also utilizing fact-based knowledge learned during their coursework. The test has also added three additional short answer questions to the original one, for a total of four. These short answer questions test a students ability to use critical thinking skills to respond to a text, graph, argument, or other historical document. Section I constitutes 60% of the students grade for the exam: 40% for the multiple choice, and 20% for short answer. The second section of the exam is composed of two questions: a document-based question and a long essay question. Students will have one hour and 30 minutes to complete this section, since both questions involve a substantial amount of writing. Both questions assess the students ability to support his or her thoughts with evidence. These questions are worth 40% of the exam grade: the document-based question counts for 25%, while the long essay counts for 15%. AP U.S. History practice testsand sample questions are available in order to inform students, instructors, history tutors, and parents of what will likely be on the test. Here is a great test prep timeline for AP exams. The changes in the AP U.S. History exam are intended to more accurately test students knowledge, and thus better position them for success in later college classes.
